Play is the child’s way of experiencing their world. Play is an opportunity to work on your inner world. Play is the child’s opportunity to express their feelings, wishes and needs without words, without choosing words, without questions.
Play therapy is a form of therapy designed specifically to work with children. It allows alleviating the child’s psychological and emotional states and offers the child the opportunity to express their feelings and experiences in a safe and supportive atmosphere.
Play therapy is different from regular play – the therapist helps the child to solve problems that have arisen for them through play. Through them, the play therapist helps children to express their feelings, wishes, needs and thoughts. The child does not have to search for words to express themselves or fear someone’s judgment.
Play therapy can support the child in working through various stressful events and experiences (e.g. divorce, family issues, accidents, death of a loved one, moving, hospitalisation, chronic illnesses, incidents of violence, etc.). Play therapy is a good tool for teaching anger management, behavioural and learning problems, supporting and improving self-esteem, and developing empathy.
The play therapist uses therapeutic communication skills and various play therapy methods and tools – sand, clay, small figurines, toys, puppets, drawing and painting supplies, movement, music, costumes, etc.
Activities include storytelling, creative visualisation, movement, role playing, etc.
The main target group of play therapy are children aged 3–12 years.
A therapy session lasts for 35–45 minutes, depending on the age of the child. There are no fewer than six sessions, and sessions take place 1–2 times per week. On average, a child needs 10–15 play therapy sessions, depending on the child and the nature of the problem.
